Immobile Accompanied by two friends, I had been on the trail of two grey wolves for quite some time. Their tracks were only a few hours old. It was obvious that we would not be able to catch up with them, but we hoped that their curiosity would outweigh their destination. Where were they going? There were big tracks and smaller ones. Was it a couple? Further into the forest their tracks disappeared separately through a multitude of other tracks. We could see the tracks of a red fox and at least two martens. There had been some action! On the way back, we were surprised to see hundreds of marten tracks on top of ours. There were several of them and once again there had been action without us being able to see it. Trying to read the tracks to find a clue as to where they had come from and where they were going, my friend Jerry pointed something in the branches. The group froze in place. He saw the two ears of a hare. Slowly moving back towards him, I could spot him. He was two meters away from us and his whiteness was almost complete. That's why the martens had left so many traces. There had certainly been a hunt and the hare had managed to escape by playing at the statue. So I was able to get close to him and make portraits of him with my 600 mm lens. Rarely have I been able to capture such precise and beautiful details of a snowshoe hare. His small brown nose punctuated with fine moustaches, his big bulging eyes and fixed. Everything about this little beast is perfect. We can observe that his right ear is slightly turned. When it is so in camouflage mode, only its ears follow the movements. He listened to us and remained motionless. A little later, accustomed to my presence, he moved around me. I was even able to witness his complete cleaning. He understood that I was not a threat to him and took advantage of my imposing size to return to his routine without worrying about the deadly martens.
